Kiewit brings the same management philosophy, the same “can do” attitude, and many of the same people to the West Closure project as it provided on the Orleans Avenue Canal Interim Closure Structure (ICS). The Kiewit team successfully performed high-quality work and zero accidents. Kiewit self-performed over 75 percent of the project with its own resources, and will use the same approach on West Closure. The work scope includes many of the same elements, such as cofferdam installation, tremie concrete placement, installation of gates and pumps, soil mixing, dredging, pile driving and underwater rock placement. Working seven days a week, 24 hours per day, to finish before the 2006 hurricane season, failure was not an option. Of three similar canal ICS projects, Kiewit was the only contractor to complete its work on time and be at full pumping capacity by the contracted deadline. The Kiewit team earned an overall rating of “Outstanding” in 30 of 31 categories. GIC intends on bringing the same proven scheduling and construction management techniques to the West Closure project.
